Snap Happy

April 14th, 2008

We have recently launched a Gallery website for Granville Fox, a photographer based in Glasgow. Granville has many years experience in wedding and portrait photography using a variety of different methods and technologies. Identity’s designers wanted to give Granville’s website visitors the opportunity to see a broad selection of his work, so we used a lightbox effect to really bring the gallery to life.

Furniture Innovations

April 11th, 2008

Identity recently created a new ECommerce system for Furniture Innovations to promote their business online.

Finding the right solution for them took time but we decided to offer their customers two options for buying their products. First is an EBay shop, where special offers and end of line stock can be purchased, and secondly a dedicated ECommerce system on their main site provides a more comprehensive range of items.

The dedicated ecommerce system allows visitors can browse by Collections or search for individual items under the main categories of Dining, Chairs, Occasional and Rugs. Using Paypal as their payment gateway gives their customers peace of mind, and helps to tie the two sites together.

Who Are We? - Carolyn

March 31st, 2008

I thought maybe it was about time I introduced myself! My name is Carolyn Cross and I started Identity in May 2007. I previously worked as a Sales Manager for a website design company based in Glasgow, a role which I developed in the two years I worked for them. However after watching them upset customers and fail to pay bills on regular occasions I decided to get out, and with the help of some of my designer contacts I set up Identity.  For further information on my former employers please visit this excellent and insightful blog!

I bring my sales and customer service experience to the business and I think one of my main strengths is talking to our clients without technical jargon. In fact, many of our clients came to us specifically for this reason as shown in some of our testimonials!

I was recently featured in the Women Into Business Networker magazine explaining a bit about what makes us different:

Which Payment Gateway?

March 18th, 2008

Paypal is the most well known payment gateway and this has both good and bad points. The administration panel is easy to use and registration is quick. It is also one of the cheaper payment gateways out there although like any big brand it has had some negative press.

Nochex has a similar pricing structure as Paypal, but being smaller means that many website visitors may not be familiar with the name. One big advantage of Nochex is the fully customisable check-out screen which allows website owners to skin the site to look like their own website. However opening an account with Nochex is not as simple as with other gateways and they do ask for financial information from new applicants.

Worldpay is more expensive but as part of the Royal Bank of Scotland some people feel more comfortable using this service. This solution is a great solution for companies who sell internationally as it accepts over 100 currencies and for a monthly fee they also offer a guarantee to protect you and your customers from fraud.

Protx is not an independent payment gateway as it requires a merchant account to be set up with your bank and works along side this to give your customers a secure payment option. The cost depends on your bank’s fees.

Some good resources to compare costs:

Google Page Rank

March 10th, 2008

I’m delighted to say that Identity’s main site has just been bumped up to a Google Page Rank of 4/10! Google is a fickle beast which dishes out Page Rank like a judge in an ice skating competition.  Page Rank is based linking structures, information about which is collected by a link analysis algorithm.  However it’s not the number of links you have that really counts, more the importance and relevance of those links in relation to your website.  For example, a

Glasgow based flower delivery site linking to an American online gaming site would not be considered as relevant, however the same site linking to a wedding photographer or local taxi service would.

Page Rank is not the only way to promote your website online, but it’s a good starting point!

Digital Brochures

January 9th, 2008

Many of our clients are looking for a new way of advertising their business and services and as a Digital Media company they tend to come to us for suggestions. Consumers are becoming more aware of the environmental implications of printing bulk leaflets and brochures and many people bin these without even reading them. We are able to provide alternatives to the usual paper suspects, in the form of Interactive CDRoms and Email Marketing.

One of our recent campaigns involved the promotion of Porcelanosa’s new flagship store at Braehead in Glasgow. Porcelanosa were looking for a way to contact their customers to invite them to the store opening and inform them of a sale. Identity created a Promotional Email for them and sent it to their database of contacts using a system which allows us to feedback important marketing information. We were able to tell Porcelanosa how many emails were openened, how many links were clicked and how many times the email was forwarded.

Owen Kerr came to us looking for an alternative to the bog standard brochure. We are currently designing an interactive CDROm for Owen Kerr Sign, Print & Display to promote their services to a wide variety of consumers. The CDRom will be interactive and will contain a portfolio section, comapny information and contact details.

So before you order the next run of brochures, have a look at the alternatives!

Myths

October 19th, 2007

So many of our clients have been confused by technical jargon from website design companies. My top three myths:

1) “Website hosting costs a fortune”
Website hosting is one of the most overpriced services out there. Many website design companies charge upwards of £50 each month for a service that costs them next to nothing.

2) “My website is being optimised for £35 a month”
Many website design companies have started their own directory where they will display your listing. They will charge you a relatively small monthly fee to “optimise” your website which to them means adding your listing to their directory. They then optimise their directory with your listing contained in it. When a potential customer searches for you they find your listing in that directory, along with the hundreds of other companies paying the directory for the same service.

3) “Websites are priced per page”
A common myth which is played on by many website design companies is that each page of a website takes the same amount of time to build. So many of our competitors charge per page which is simply not how web design works! Imagine you were making a poster for a birthday party. Most of your time is taken up designing the poster and printing the first copy, but once you have done this it is a simple and quick task to print 5 copies. Making 50 copies might be more time consuming and costly as you will have to pay for more ink and paper. The same principals apply to website design and this is why we price our sites in bands like e.g. Up to 6 pages, 7-20 pages, 20-50 pages.

The Arches

September 14th, 2007

Today Identity launched a new site for The Arches in Glasgow.

The Arches was taken over from British Rail in 1991 and turned in to the most multi-functional venue Scotland has to offer. From clubbing to eating, theatre and educational events there is something for everyone on their large programme of events.

We wanted to provide a solution that fitted with their eclectic style but still offered them an easy platform for updating their site. Identity’s Senior Designer Colin Abercrombie came up with the fantastic layout, incorporating a flash movie designed to give the visitor a real inside look at what to expect from the venue. We also wanted to make the events easily distinguishable so Colin came up with a colour coded solution so the visitor can easily find what they are looking for.

To make the system easy to manage, we incorporated a MODx Content Management System, which allows The Arches full control over the content, images and event listings. We added a few modifications to the MODx system to allow the events to be ordered chronologically and to allow us to link the events with the appropriate ticket booking page. The whole system is so easy to use that we created log in access for all The Arches staff so that the updating doesn’t need to be done by one person.

So, why not visit the site today and see what events are coming up? There’s bound to be something that interests you!
